In the classification of pumps, according to their slurry delivery conditions, we refer to pumps suitable for transporting liquids (mediums) containing suspended solids as slurry pumps. At present, the slurry pump is one of the indispensable equipment in various technological processes such as ore beneficiation, coal preparation, desulfurization, and filter press feeding. As people pay more attention to environmental protection, the sealing of slurry pumps is also being paid more and more attention.
There are three main types of shaft seals for slurry pumps: packing seal, expeller seal, and mechanical seal. These three types of shaft seals have their own advantages, which are introduced as follows:
Packing Seal:
The packing seal of the slurry pump relies on the soft and hard running-in between the packing and the shaft sleeve to achieve the sealing effect. The packing seal needs to add shaft seal water, the pressure of which must exceed the slurry pump discharge pressure. This sealing method is easy for Replacement and is widely used in ore dressing plants and coal washing plants.
Expeller Seal:
The expeller seal of the slurry pump relies on the pressure generated by the expeller to achieve the sealing effect. This sealing method is employed when the user is short of water resources.
Mechanical Seal:
The mechanical seal relies on the close contact between the rotary ring and the static ring in the axial direction to achieve the sealing purpose. The mechanical seal can prevent water from leaking and is especially popular in major domestic concentrators and power plants. However, it is necessary to protect the friction surface to avoid abrasion during installation. Mechanical seals are generally divided into single mechanical seals and double mechanical seals.


At this stage, we recommend the single mechanical seal with flushing water inmineral separation plants. This type of mechanical seal has been widely used. Although mechanical seals without flushing water are also recommended by mechanical seal manufacturers, they are not ideal in field applications.
In addition to the above three commonly used shaft seals, there is also a shaft seal, which is called "L"-shaped shaft seal in this industry. This kind of shaft seal is generally used in large or huge slurry pumps, but is rarely used in small and medium-sized slurry pumps.
Therefore, in the selection of the slurry pumps, not only the pump performance specifications must be considered, but the selection of the shaft seal is also very critical. Selecting the suitable shaft seal for slurry pumps, based on the characteristics of the transported medium at site and the working conditions, will extend the reliable operation time of the pump and reduce the down time caused by the replacement of shaft seal. In this way, not only the total ownership cost is very much reduced, but also the working efficiency is greatly improved.

During operation, there are four types of common failures of slurry pumps: corrosion and abrasion, mechanical failure, performance failure and shaft sealing failure. These four types of failures often affect each other.
For example, the corrosion and abrasion of the impeller will cause performance failure and mechanical failure, and the damage of the shaft seal will also cause performance failure and mechanical failure.
1. Bearings Overheated
A. Too much, too little or deterioration of lubricating grease/oil will cause the bearing to heat up, and the appropriate amount and quality of oil should be adjusted.
B. Check whether the pump -motor unit is concentric, adjust the pump and aglign it with the motor.
C. If the vibration is abnormal, check whether the rotor is balanced.
2. Reasons and solutions that may causenon output of slurry
A. There is still air in the suction pipe or pump, which should be filled with liquid to discharge the air.
B. The valves on the inlet and outlet pipeline are closed or the blind plate is not removed, then the valve should be opened and the blind plate removed.
C. The actual head is higher than the maximum head of the pump, a pump with higher head should be employed
D. The rotation direction of the impeller is wrong, so the rotation direction of the motor should be corrected.
E. The lifting height is too high, which should be lowered, and the pressure at the inlet should be increased.
F. The debris is blocked the pipe or the suction pipeline is small, the blockage should be removed and the pipe diameter should be enlarged.
G. The speed does not match, which should be adjusted to meet the requirements.
3. Reasons and solutions for insufficient flow and head
A. The impeller is damaged, replace it with a new impeller.
B. Too much damage to the sealing ring, replace the sealing ring.
C. The inlet and outlet valves are not fully opened, they should be fully opened.
D. The density of the medium does not meet the requirements of the pump, re-calculate it.
4. Reasons for serious seal leakage and solutions
A. Improper selection of sealing element materials, replace suitable elements.
B. Serious wear, replace the worn parts and adjust the spring pressure.
C. If the O-ring is damaged, replace the O-ring.
5. Reasons and solutions of motor overload
A. The pump and engine (output end of the motor or diesel engine) are not aligned, adjust the position so that the two are aligned.
B. The relative density of the medium becomes larger, change the operating conditions or replace the motor with suitable power.
C. Friction occurs in the rotating part, repair the friction part.
D. The resistance (such as pipeline friction loss) of the device is low, and the flow will become bigger than required. The drain valve should be closed to obtain the flow rate specified on the pump label.

Proper lubrication reduces friction, prevents corrosion, and extends bearing life. Methods include:
1. Drip Lubrication: For low/mid-speed bearings (<5 m/s). Adjust drip rate (3–8 sec/drop). Over-lubrication causes overheating.
2. Manual Lubrication: For light loads or intermittent use. Use filtered covers to prevent contamination.
3. Oil Ring Lubrication: For horizontal shafts (>50 mm diameter). Use one ring for width/diameter ratio <2.
4. Oil Bath Lubrication: Immerse bearings partially; oil level below the lowest roller center.
5. Circulating Oil: For high-speed bearings. Filtered oil cools and lubricates via a pump system.
6. Spray Lubrication: For high-speed/high-temperature bearings. Compressed air delivers oil mist while cooling.
Key Notes:
Maintain seal water pressure and adjust packing to prevent leaks.
Keep bearings clean; operating temp ≤ 65°C (max 75°C).
Ensure motor-pump alignment and inspect coupling elastomers regularly.
