The gland assembly plays a crucial role in the operation of a slurry pump. When the pump starts and begins operating, the slurry or other media inside the pump moves along the pump shaft, which can cause friction between the shaft and the pump casing. To prevent leakage from this friction, the gland assembly works in tandem with the split gland packing to compress the packing, creating a seal.
During pump operation, the gland followers applies continuous pressure to the packing material, and this pressure needs to be adjusted according to the pump’s working conditions. If the pressure is too high, it can accelerate the wear of the packing and degrade its sealing performance. Conversely, if the pressure is too low, it may fail to prevent leakage. Typically, by adjusting the gland followers pressure, the sealing performance can be precisely controlled to ensure the slurry pump operates effectively under high load and pressure.
Additionally, over time, the solid particles in the slurry can cause wear to the pump shaft, leading to the failure of the packing seal. In this case, the gland follower’s adjustment function becomes particularly important, as it can increase pressure as needed to delay packing wear or enable timely replacement, preventing issues like shaft leakage, overheating, or pump casing damage.
